Why are there so many Christians against people drinking wine ?
It is more prevalent than meet the eyes.
Many years ago I read about a Christian movie critic writing and giving his analysis on Hollywood films in some forums. It went something like this:
......this movie is quite disturbing; heavy in violence; the F word is used 15 times, the lord's name is used in vain 20 times, there is nudity; Max's mom kisses her boyfriend and they DRINK WINE.......
Thereafter, there were many more encounters with other Christians I read on the web and in a group fellowship that were against the idea of we Christians consuming wine, as if it is cocaine or opium. OK so a little exageration and sarcasm souldn't be offensive for the sake of me trying to deliver my point. Oddly I never had a chance to question anyone of them to provide biblical grounds or even simply why wine (not hard liquor) is considered such a taboo.
The time when Jesus walked on earth he was served with wine (more than water) where ever he goes. His first miracle performed was turning water to wine in a wedding feast. Jesus used wine as parables to convey His messages. For what I learned, according my old elementary bible school that wine is symbol of celebration and in my own words, I feel wine is a gift from God to his people to enjoy and to give thanks. One church I attended serve wine (not grape juice) in communion.
Medical journals have proven that wine fights cancer and reduce the risks of heart diseases if consumed moderately.
The only reasons that a person should refrain from drinking are as the followings:
1. The purpose to reach a state of drunkenness (clearly forbid in the Bible)
2. If it is a stumbling block to your brothers. ie. If the presence of wine would tempt a person to drink and result in a relapse from alcohol recovery program.
3. If alcohol has adverse effect to your health due to medical reasons.
Am I missing something?
You might think that I tried a little too hard to justify because I am a drinker. Yes I do enjoy a glass of red during supper in occasions. Wine has no bondage over me and simply I enjoy it. Period. But if anyone could provide me with wisdom in scriptures or simply share a though or two that it may hinder my walk with Jesus I'd be glad to discard all the remaining bottles in my kitchen.
