At the time Jesus ministered, among a number of mystic Jews, represented by the writings of Philo, for example, the term "son of god" actually was a reference to the Memra (aramaic for WORD, and in Greek, LOGOS). John was not the first author to write about the WORD that was with the Lord, that made all this. These Jews believed that the WORD and the Holy Name of God, by which God spoke this creation, was the true intermediary of the Lord. That intermediary, God's first emination, His first "creation" is the intermediary between man and the Lord.
When Jesus refers to Himself as the son of the man, he is speaking of the Name of God within men. He is that spirit in the flesh.
'the son of the man' is the literal translation in 82 instances where today you read "Son of Man". Modern scholars could not understand it and presumed Jesus was using bad grammer. So they changed it.
But son of the man makes perfect sense, like the fuel of the engine, the very life of the soul.
Understand, this was the extant belief among the non-political Jews of the time.
And Clement of Alexandria and a few others who were the early translators of today's Bible held the same belief.
So, who was Jesus? Who was the Christ?
Jesus was the WORD, the LOGOS, the Name of God made flesh.
I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.
the power of your name, the name you gave me
Whose name is it? "your name"? The Father? or "the name you gave me", Jesus?
It is not a spoken name, JCiL. When you understand that the Name of Christ is the audible Holy Spirit, it binds the entire Bible together into a single teaching. Jesus was that Holy Spirit in the flesh. He was the Holy Name made flesh. But this was the same Christ who was David's Lord.
That is how David could worship Christ, rejoice in His Name all day long and find salvation without knowing the word "Jesus". The Name of Christ is the Name of the Lord. Same Name. And that is the true son and only son of God, the only way anyone can find salvation. It did not change when Jesus walked the earth. He was the fulfillment of that Word. When Christians today love Christ and His Father, they love the same One whom sincere and faithful Jews loved throughout their own history: Christ and the Lord.
Only through His Name. The Name of the Father, the Name of Jesus Christ.
'Of' meaning 'from', not a label for.
