The first game was today.

The winner will get millions of dollars, a fancy trophy made of obsidian, fame, and most importantly of all - rating points.

Should be interesting!
Ah. Thanks for the reminder. I knew it was coming up, but not sure when.

I was disappointed that Magnus did not play the so called "Bongcloud Defense" as his opening. It's always a pretty slim possibility, but he's defeated Grandmasters with it before - and can you imagine the chaos?

Ok. I've heard of the bong cloud, but my understanding of it isn't deep enough to comment. I just watched the game on Agadmator's channel.

He'd be absolutely slated - totally disrespectful of both his opponent and the WC itself.

First game was, indeed, interesting, if not spectacular - boggo Ruy Lopez ended up in a very weird theortical novelty.

And didn't "Bobby Fischer" use something of the sort in his online games against Nigel Short, when his king went for a walk?
If that was Fischer, yes. But it’s effectively to resign if played in classical chess in a championship setting.

Game 3 (a third consecutive draw):

The last decisive classical game in a WC was in 2016.:sneaky:

I hate the "winner stays on" format, too - imagine a World Cup or Superbowl where last time's winner gets a bye to the final... who'd bother watching that garbage?
