Checkmate, atheist!

Anyone for chess? :)

I play as Torin_3 on Lichess, which is a completely free online chess site. You can send me a challenge if you like.

It needs to be either a Correspondence game (no time limit), or a Classical game (30-ish minutes each). I probably will not accept the challenge otherwise.

(I will not actually say anything like "Checkmate, atheist!" if I win. The title is solely an attention grabber. I believe in good sportsmanship.)

I would play but no time.

Worst of all, one of my crackin smart grandsons nearly whooped me last summer. I just fell apart in the middle, started running away from his attacks. He finally asked me "what are you doing", and then I distracted him and we got busy doing something else and never finished. Destroyed by a 13 year old! I'm done.

I would accept your sociable offer...except for the fact that I suck monumentally at chess.

Like Furion, I had a bad experience with a child (I think he was 12 at the time) some years ago when he beat me rather easily. I've since found out that he's now (as an adult) ranked in the top 20 players in Australia, so that's some consolation, but still...I know I suck.

Thanks for responding. I completely understand not wanting to play.

If he is one of the top 20 in Australia, though, he has probably been studying chess intensely from a very early age. Just a thought.

I'm game for correspondence chess but must agree to no computer or book consulting.

I think the last game I played was in 1999, with a fellow physics major, before his deployment to submariner school, in our local infinity society club in college.

Sounds interesting though.

Okay, Torin. I'm not familiar with Lichess, how do we proceed?
First you would need to register a username on Lichess. To do that, you would click on "Sign In" on the upper right of the screen, then on "Register." It should be a lot like registering a username on CARM.

Then you would need to either (1) send a challenge to me (my profile is linked in the OP above) or (2) tell me the username you registered so that I can send a challenge to you.

Zorro52 awaits your challenge.

@Lt. Columbo won, in case anyone is curious. I played the London System opening, which went well, but I used up some important pieces in an attack which did not pay off and he was able to take advantage of that.

It was fun, though - we should play again some time!

On the upside, perhaps my loss will make other CARMites more willing to play!

Torin, thanks for the game! Yes, let's play again some time.

Cool!

I'm not sure if you were aware, but Lichess has a smartphone app. If you download it, you will get notifications whenever someone either challenges you to a game or makes a move in a correspondence game. I find it really handy.

Just something to consider. The app is free, like all things Lichess.

Interested in a Correspondence game?

It had been more than a couple years since I last played, so I tried a few practice games to see if I could shake the cobwebs off. Probably won't be pretty, but I'll give it a go.

As a matter of curiosity, what's up with the no-time-limit option for Correspondence games? I'm surprised that Lichess supports it. What happens if one player drops out? Wouldn't the game remain on the "in play" list forever unless the remaining player resigns? Why do you prefer it?

Yes, I am! You can send me a challenge or tell me your Lichess username and I will send you one.

Hey, I am no grandmaster myself.

Yes. It's an occupational hazard. :)

I like it for days when I have work and cannot set aside an entire 30-60 minutes at a time for a game. It means I can make a move whenever I have a spare moment.

I do also play a lot of Classical matches, which have time limits. We can do that, but we would both need to have a full hour (or whatever) available at the same time.

My game with @Lt. Columbo did not take very long at all - maybe 20 or 30 minutes. It was nominally a Correspondence game.

Then why wouldn't you accept a Correspondence game where each player is given say One Day for each move? You'd only need to make 1 move within 24 hours of your opponents last move.
