IRS must turn over Trump tax returns to Congress, DoJ says

Department says House panel has ‘sufficient reasons’ for requesting returns as Nancy Pelosi hails ‘victory for the rule of law’

The US Department of Justice on Friday ordered the Internal Revenue Service to hand Donald Trump’s tax returns to a House committee, saying the panel had “invoked sufficient reasons” for requesting them.

The news was a second blow for Trump in a matter of hours, after released DoJ memos revealed that as part of his campaign to overturn his election defeat by Joe Biden, he pressured top officials to falsely label the 2020 election as corrupt, then “leave the rest to me”.

House speaker Nancy Pelosi applauded the DoJ’s order to the IRS to release Trump’s tax returns to the ways and means committee.

“Today, the Biden administration has delivered a victory for the rule of law, as it respects the public interest by complying with Chairman [Richard] Neal’s request for Donald Trump’s tax returns,” Pelosi said in a statement.

“Access to former President Trump’s tax returns is a matter of national security. The American people deserve to know the facts of his troubling conflicts of interest and undermining of our security and democracy as president.”

Ouch!

Yesterday was a bad one for the orange messiah. There's a pretty good chance that his tax returns are going to be released to the public, too. it'll be interesting to see what they contain - if only because he fought so hard to keep them hidden...

I am not sure if Congress would be able to release the tax returns to the public, but if hearings are held, or conclusions drawn, those would be public.

Yes, this is what I meant; not that they'd simply release them, but that Dr.u.mp.f's returns would emerge simply as part of the process of investigation.

I don't think that Trump's tax returns will reveal any criminal activity; he has too much money to hire such dire accountants that they would leave an obvious trail.

The reason he has fought so hard to keep his tax returns private is because they will reveal how terrible he is as a business man. Their release will shatter part of the illusion he has created.

NO Business man wants the secrets of their business dealings to be made public. Let's see the Returns of his accusers as they conduct their fishing expedition.

This is possible.

An equally-likely possibility IMO is that he'll be revealed to have financial ties to Russia - of the kind that would normally get a person denied top secret access. Or a job at the FBI. Or any other situation in which it'd be a liability to have an eminently blackmailable person in charge of military/intelligence assets.

We already know he is a terrible businessman. Remember his 6 bankruptcies? How about Trump vodka, Trump Airlines, Trump University? And what kind of billionaire sets up a mail order meat business?

That almost sounds like conspiracy theory. Lol!

It's kind of sad that you guys have to focus on a guy who's been out of office for half a year because your guy has no successes you can point to.

This time in Donald Trump's term, we were all pointing toward the great things he'd done.

This time in Dementia Joe's term, all you can do is make desperate attempts to deflect from his failures.

It would be sad if it were true.
This time in Donald Trump's term, we were all pointing toward the great things he'd done.
You were imagining the great things he's done.
This time in Dementia Joe's term, all you can do is make desperate attempts to deflect from his failures.
We've no need to do so.

Wouldn't be a bad idea from a business perspective.
With all due respect, that's irrelevant to the exchange between the two of us.

You said the possibility that the former white house occupant could have financial ties to Russia sounded like a conspiracy theory; and now you're calling some aspect of this a good idea from a business perspective.

It's both possible and reasonable to imagine that a president with significant financial ties to an enemy nation would be a security risk, sitting behind the resolute desk. And thus, a possible reason that he's hiding his tax returns...
