Using "..improved technology to produce the fuel using electrolyzers—devices that split water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable sources—is shaking up the clean energy world. "

Forbes (11/17/2022)

"Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba (BGU) and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa may have identified a way to improve the process and reduce costs" using photoelectrochemistry.

How is the hydrogen stored? Is it just as a compressed gas, or is there more to it?

Since the tanks are not insulated for cryogenic storage the hydrogen is still in its gaseous state at ambient temperature. All hydrogen tanks are regulated worldwide, and the regulations significantly restrict the leak rate to miniscule levels. The tanks are engineered using three separate layers. One layer is a plastic inner lining, the next is a sheet of carbon fiber, and finally an outer layer of glass fiber completes the seal.

It's my understanding that one could fill a tank designed to contain H2 (g) in your garage and if you measured the pressure after a decade of simply letting the tank sit in place the pressure gage wouldn't record any significant loss of gas. I am also confident that engineers have mitigated the Joule-Thomson effect that very effectively chills the filling nozzles as one fills up a tank for 5 minutes.

BMW Tests Fuel Cell EV Waters _ iX5

"BMW announced that it will use a base vehicle supplied by its factory in Spartenburg, North Carolina, to build a test fleet of its new iX5 fuel cell EV in Germany.

Wait, was Toyota right about hydrogen this whole time?"

Titanium Oxide - Clean Hydrogen production breakthrough (7/13/2023)

TIO2.jpg

"The discovery offers an alternative to current methods that generate greenhouse gas and require a great deal of energy. Photocatalysis, a process that can split hydrogen from water using only sunlight, has been explored for several decades, but has remained a more distant consideration because the catalyst materials enabling the process can only survive it for a day or two, which limits its long-term efficiency and, as a result, its commercial viability".

Researchers "reported [a recent] discovery of photocatalytic titanium oxide-based, one-dimensional nanofilament material that can help sunlight glean hydrogen from water for months at a time".

The case for FCEVs is pretty compelling, for large commercial vehicles.

Hydrogen combustion engine:

- first time ever prototype used
- boil-off issue mitigated in racing environment
- directly injected into the engine

Some issues:

- piston driven pump (temperature induced contraction is an issue) I'm thinking they should try a venturi to move gaseous hydrogen instead.
- Space problem: This does not have to be an issue because high pressure gaseous hydrogen tanks work
- Temperature problem: Insulation works well
