yes assumptions...And Luke 3:23 says that Jesus' biological father was assumed to be Heli's son. But since maternity is a matter of fact whereas paternity is just a matter of opinion without a reliable paternity test, then some have suggested Jesus' biological father could have been a Roman centurion.
