Self Publishing vs Established Publishers

Does anyone here have experience publishing their work? Did you self publish, and if so, what method did you use? If you used an established publisher, who did you find to be the best all around?

I am technically self-published, though my company is more than that. I have two companies, a fiction and gaming company (Hero's Guild Publications) and a Bible study company (Swordmaster Publications). The question I would ask first is, what are you trying to publish?
