What is the diet of worms?
The latest food craze! Guaranteed to make you lose weight, because the food is so disgusting, you can't eat it! :p

Sorry, couldn't resist. The diet of Worms was were Martin Luther was put on trial, in the town of Worms, Germany. Where he refused to recant and made his famous "Here I stand" speech.

Actually I did learn in response to this that Imperial Diets were not legislative but rather they negotiated. I believe I had that understanding but hadn't heard it put that way before.

Yep. It is surprising that what the Diet of Worms is most remembered for, what Martin Brecht in Martin Luther Road to Reformation calls, "the Luther affair," wasn't even on the agenda before the Diet.

The appearance of Luther, the questioning of him, and the allowable scope of his response were all dynamically negotiated at the Diet to one extent or another. Luther on his part thought he was going to the Diet to die as a heretic like Hus.

The young emperor and delegates of Rome didn't get what they expected or wanted. God got what He expected and wanted out of the Diet.

Hah! No, we joked about eating a "diet of worms". Our teacher explained what a "diet" is in this context, and that Worms is a town in Germany. But we still had fun with the name.
A very large and old city I recently read.

Worms developed after Romans conquered the city in 14 BC, but Germanic tribes and Celts before that are believed to have inhabited the area for more than 5,000 years previously. Under Roman rule, Worms became the capital of the Burgundian Kingdom and relics of the time can be seen at the Worms City Museum.
