The demoniac

We find this in Mark 5:

5 "They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled."

Some facts:
1. This man was demon possessed and lived among the dead(2-3).
2. This man was very strong, able to break chains and shackles(3-4).
3. He would cut himself day and night with stones, screaming and yelling(5).
4. The demons recognized the authority of Jesus and were the only ones communicating with Him(6-8)
5. This man was possessed with many demonic spirits, some say around 5000(9).
6. The demons recognized the power of Jesus and HAD to ask permission to enter swine,an unclean animal(10-13)

My questions:
1. Why did the demons have to ask permission from Jesus to leave a man and enter swine?
2. Did the demons need to ask Jesus permission to originally enter the man, potentially when he was a child?

My observations:
1. The man was physically and spiritually dead.
2. Only Jesus(God) could make this man alive.
3. Arminianism is a false gospel.

1st question ?

The passage doesn't say why but if we go by what we know about Jesus from other scriptures from John 1, Hebrews 1, Colossians 1 and the 4 gospels we know that the Son has all authority over Creation and all of it is under His control and authority and He holds it all together. There are other passages where demons acknowledge His presence/authority and are in submission to Him. Also the disciples noticed all things were under the control of Jesus commands such as the weather, the sea, demons, sickness, disease etc..........

2nd question ?

That is an area I would rather not tread because it would just be a guess and I don't like to guess or make an assumption about them asking permission.

The only passage I am aware of where we see a dialogue between satan and the Lord where boundaries are discussed is Job 1. There we see the Lord both restricting and allowing satan to do certain things to people with Jobs family. From that passage we can get some insight as to what might be happening behind the scenes down here and that is a possible answer to your 2nd question.

I say all that to say this I would not be adamant about a position either way. I would personally lean towards my above comment as a biblical answer but I would not be dogmatic about it imho.

hope this helps !!!

Another Passage that might help is where Jesus was asked who Sinned that the Child was Born Blind?

But I wouldn't think Jesus the Man gave his permission for the Demons to enter the Demoniac as a child...

The Problem of Evil ~ by Reverend RV

John 9:1-2 NIV; As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

How can you adequately address the Problem of Evil in a one page Gospel Tract?? When I first became a Christian I foolishly thought it would be an easy thing. The Bible says that God tries us in the Crucible like molten Gold; skimming the Dross off the top. This intellectual answer falls short of being compassionate though, and it can never help those who have suffered from the evil acts of men. Though my answer is partly correct, we have to resist the Pride of head knowledge; God can show ‘us’ how it falls short. Later in my life I suffered from the evil actions of men and though I had head knowledge, I still cried out to God, “Why??” ~ The Problem of Evil is the main reason Atheists rule out the existence of God; if there were a God, why doesn’t he do anything about Evil? “Okay, okay, that’s fair. Where should God begin?”

What if God started with you? ~ Have you ever told a Lie? Sure you have; what do you call people that Lie? You object, “Wait right there, Lying isn’t Evil!” Let me ask you this, is Satan Evil? “Yes…” The Devil is called “the Father of Lies”. Have you ever committed Adultery? Jesus said that if you have Lusted after someone, you’ve committed Adultery in your Heart. People who have cheated on their Spouse usually have the consent of the other woman when they have an affair; but Lust never has the other persons consent! Have you ever Hated somebody? If you’ve suffered because of Evil, I bet you have. Jesus said that Hatred is Murder in our Hearts. Satan is a murderer from the beginning; just by telling Lies. If you’ve ever said that someone belongs in Hell, you recognize God’s authority to Judge even you. ~ These were only three of the Ten Commandments, if God judged you by his Laws, would you be innocent or guilty? Would you go to Heaven or Hell? ~ You don’t have to go to Hell; God HAS done something about Evil…

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have Everlasting Life! Jesus Christ is this Son of God, born of a Virgin in order to not be tainted by the Sin of Adam. He lived a Sinless life and was killed by the hands and hearts of Sinful Men, for the Sins of all believers. He was Crucified and shed his blood as punishment for Sins we deserved to pay for. After three days in the grave, he arose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of God in Heaven. We’re Saved by God’s Grace through Faith in the Resurrected Savior Jesus Christ, without Works lest we should boast. Repent of your Sins, Confess Jesus Christ as your Lord God and start going to a Church that teaches the Bible. ~ God uses Evil; although we meant Sin for Evil, God means it for Good; for the Saving of many lives. When asked why the man was born blind, Jesus said it wasn’t because of ‘Sin/Evil’ but for that very moment; so the Works of God would be displayed by healing his eyes. ~ If you were comforted because I said that even I had to ask God “Why??”, Jesus himself asked why; even though he had all the head knowledge a person can have about it. Jesus understands your experience like no one else can…

Psalm 22:1a ESV; My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Who would have given the demons permission to enter this child/man?

The point of this topic is to prove that this man was dead, and needed help. But I also wanted to show God's sovereignty.
The Pre-Incarnate Logos of God gave the Demons permission to enter the man as a child...

God probably asked, 'Who will go and Posses this Child?'. A Legion of Wicked Spirits probably raised their hands and said, "We'll go!". As a matter of Fact; in his Providence, the Pre-Incarnate Logos of God permitted this 'so the Works of God would be displayed in the Exorcism of the Legion of Demons'...

3. Arminianism is a false gospel.
1. How did you observe from the passage that the man was physically dead?
2. When was the man made spiritually alive, before or after he ran and fell down before Jesus?
3. Tu quoque: Calvinism is a false gospel?

Answering a question with a question is not an answer to the question.

The Complex Question Fallacy you are famous for on CARM

A complex question is a fallacy in which the answer to a given question presupposes a prior answer to a prior question. Also known as (or closely related to) a loaded question, a trick question, a leading question, the fallacy of the false question, and the fallacy of many questions.

next....................................................................................................................

conclusion: let us know when you can do the following:

a- address the question with an answer from the bible
b- address the scripture passage with an exegetical answer
c- quit playing your games

hope this helps !!!

1. How did you observe from the passage that the man was physically dead?
Technically his heart was beating, but it seems he had no control over himself, but rather was controlled by demons. Would you argue he was alive?
2. When was the man made spiritually alive, before or after he ran and fell down before Jesus?
Can you provide the verse in question?
3. Tu quoque: Calvinism is a false gospel?
It can be if it is conditional.

1. The passage does not state the man was physically dead.
2. True.
3. Tu quoque: Calvinism is a false gospel.

Now a question for you:
When was the man made spiritually alive, before or after he ran and fell down before Jesus?

Can you provide the verse in question?
Here it is; was he spiritually alive before or after he ran and fell down before Jesus?
We find this in Mark 5:

5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. ...

It can be if it is conditional.
Was it conditional on him running and falling down before Jesus?

not to be argumentative but its a constant response over and over again and again from the poster.

think of "yachristian" on the Trinity forum. its all he does is re ask the same questions reframed a 1000 times 24/7.
Your response about the Logical Fallacy was great. If we can't reach the Posters, we can reach the Lurkers...

I don't think so. I do not believe the man was speaking to Jesus, but rather the demons were.
I don't think so; what if it was the man who was crying and cutting himself?

If one believes his running and falling down before Jesus saved him, then yes that is conditional.
Running and falling down before Jesus does not save, anymore than faith saves; rather, it pleases God to save.

Answering a question with a question?
its your claim adding to scripture is a no no.

But hey you can add to scripture all you want with your ideas, its reminds me of another poster who has a bad habit of confusing his personal ideas with the bible.

oh and whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

I was speaking your language, stooping to your level of reasoning.

You should of jumped at the chance to give a biblical answer but as we know you CANNOT.

fyi- mr peanut if you want to plays games unfortunately for you I'm a master at it and thats not something to be proud of its part of my fallen nature I've perfected over the years. People who know me personally usually avoid trolling me because I can give it back 10 fold.
