In 2011 the Girls Scouts of America came out with a statement that they would welcome transgender children and adolescents who identified as girls into their organisation, saying (in part):
"...if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe."
In response, of course, the whiny right claimed that the Girl Scouts had "lost its moral compass" and created a petition to get them to rescind their policy. The petition said, in part:
“This means girls in the organization will be forced to recognize and accept transgenderism as a normal lifestyle. Boys in skirts, boys in make-up and boys in tents will become a part of the program. This change will put young innocent girls at risk.”
They also organised a Girl Scout Cookie boycott which, of course, went absolutely nowhere.
Ten years later, I'd like to ask - where are the 'young innocent girls' who have suffered from this policy? Where is the harm that has come from it? Or was the right's fearmongering prompted by nothing more than their usual hatred of anything remotely liberal?
