Joachimism exerted a significant influence upon the thinking of people, de Lubac maintained, as far apart in their views as the once-liberal then utopian-socialist Henri de Saint-Simon, the Nazi racial theorist Alfred Rosenberg, and, above all, Karl Marx and associated Marxist theorists such as the German philosopher Ernst Bloch. There was, however, another way in which the Joachimite vision manifests itself: this is the idea that secularization is not just inevitable but even represents a type of fulfillment of Christianity. By “secular,” de Lubac did not mean the temporal realm which exists alongside the sphere of faith. This distinction has always been part and parcel of Christian approaches to politics, even in the worst cases of Caesaropapism. Instead, he had in mind secularization as the conversion of the Christian idea of salvation into ideologies of the progress of man through history—progress being understood as the steady advance of a post-Christian secular humanitarianism that seeks to take care of all people’s needs in the here-and-now.

That said, Joachimist tendencies have hardly disappeared from the West. One can find this in various forms of techno-utopianism which hold out the prospect of ushering in a type of nirvana through the progress of science. Then there are propositions to literally transform human nature, such as posited by the transhumanist movement. Another more pedestrian but far more common example is the reduction of salvation to politics. Consider the depressing regularity with which many in the West have invested politicians with Messiah-like qualities, or the sheer faith that so many of the European Union’s political class place in supranational social democratic institutions to bring about what amounts to a very secular pacem in terris—illusions which constantly run up against some of the realities highlighted by St. Augustine in his City of God, not to mention even more basic truths about the human condition underscored by Christianity.

Blake drew out most concretely the social implications of rooting mysticism in communism and vice versa, the tradition was as old as Christianity itself, and surfaced repeatedly throughout the Middle Ages. A.L. Morton points to the radical roots of Blake’s faith when he reminds us that the “everlasting gospel” was the watchword of both the radical incarnationalist and the revolutionary, millenarian traditions. The phrase can be traced back to the apocalyptic spirituality of Joachim de Fiore, a twelfth-century abbot from whom radical Christians drew their historical mythology.

Joachim preached that history fell into three ages, the age of the father, or law; the age of the son, or the church; and the age of the spirit, in which both those props would become unnecessary and the evangelium aeternum would be directly revealed in the human heart. Joachim’s vision posited immediate entry into this third age, in which humanity, existing on a spiritual place in contemplative bliss, would require neither property, nor marriage, nor political authority.

His vision was barely articulated, however, before the idea of the “new age” had been brought down to earth by others with revolutionary aspirations. At first, the everlasting gospel inspired Franciscan Spirituals to lives of voluntary poverty in proclamation of the belief that Christian life was completely incompatible with the accumulation of material wealth, views which soon threw them into serious conflict with a worldly church.

This reminds me of Matt's debates with Shawn McCraney. It's all about love, the Holy Spirit, the New Age of Aquarius, Joachim's Third Age, Spiritual Exercises, getting rid of the letter and just tapping into God directly etc. etc. Solid doctrine, presbyters and Bible thumping no more. How dare you call someone a heretic, no one really understands the Bible. We need to conquer those 7 mountains first, usher in the New Age of love and peace and kittens.

Theory of the three ages (Joachim of Fiore)
The mystical basis of his teaching is his doctrine of the "eternal gospel", founded on an interpretation of Revelation 14:6 (Rev 14:6, "Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation and tribe and language and people." NRSV translation.).

His theories can be considered millenarian; he believed that history, by analogy with the Trinity, was divided into three fundamental epochs:
  • The Age of the Father, corresponding to the Old Testament, characterized by obedience of mankind to the Rules of God;
  • The Age of the Son, between the advent of Christ and 1260, represented by the New Testament, when Man became the son of God;
  • The Age of the Holy Spirit, impending, a contemplative utopia. The Kingdom of the Holy Spirit, a new dispensation of universal love, would proceed from the Gospel of Christ, but transcend the letter of it. In this new Age the ecclesiastical organization would be replaced and the Order of the Just would rule the Church. This Order of the Just was later identified with the Franciscan order by his follower Gerardo of Borgo San Donnino.
Joachim's idea of the Age of the Holy Spirit would also later greatly influence the Cult of the Holy Spirit which would in later centuries have considerable impact in Portugal and its colonies, and would suffer severe persecution by the Portuguese Inquisition.

According to Joachim, only in this third age will it be possible to truly understand the words of God in their deepest meanings, and not merely literally. In this period, instead of the parousia (second Advent of Christ), a new epoch of peace and concord would begin; also, a new religious "order" of spiritual men will arise, thus making the present hierarchy of the Church almost unnecessary.

Joachim distinguished between the "reign of justice" or "of law" in an imperfect society, and the "reign of freedom" in a perfect society.

I think the entire world is profoundly religious in character - not just the West. Africa, The Middle East, and even atheist China and Russia or the secular EU have more theists than atheists by a large margin. The vast majority of humans are theists - Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, or just a belief in a Supreme Being are most common I think..

But I do not follow how secularism is connected - sorry if I missed it :)

Remember that science back then was theology. There was no thought at all of a separation between the 2. Our natural experiences would over time cleave the supernatural away as we saw no rhyme or reason to the world we were becoming more empirically familiar with, how we forged peace in our societies through human effort, and the supernatural world described to us through the ancient texts.

As a secular humanist, I of course see it the other way around.... all the good of man is credited to god, all the bad of man is credited to the devil. I say let's just leave credit lay where credit is due... right here where all the work is getting done.

Transhumanism is essentially Chiliasm through Technopapism. Secularity is an illusion.

This is Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun utopia.

In the City of the Sun no occupation is vile or base, and all are of equal dignity—in fact, those workers who are required to expend greater effort, such as artisans and builders, receive more praise. Everyone must be acquainted with all lines of work, and then each person practices the one for which he shows the greatest aptitude. They have no servants, and no service is regarded as unworthy. The only thing that they consider to be despicable is idleness, and in this way they come to privilege the dignity of work and to overturn an absurd conception of nobility, linked to inactivity and vice.

Thanks to the equal division of labour, it is sufficient for each person to spend only four hours a day working; but it is essential that they all work, because the idleness of one would have repercussions on the profit and the effort of the others. The citizens possess nothing; instead, everything is held in common, from food to houses, from the acquisition of knowledge to the exercise of activities, from honors to amusements, from women to children.

There are “officials” in charge of the distribution of each thing, who keep an eye out and make sure that this happens justly, but no one can appropriate anything for himself. According to them, possession of a house or a family reinforces “self-love”, with all the dire consequences this generates. They live “like philosophers in common” because they are aware of the negative impact, not only on the social but also on the moral level, of an unequal distribution of goods.

One of the most spectacular and imaginative aspects of The City of the Sun, which immediately struck its readers, are the painted walls of the city. Apart from enclosing and protecting the city, the walls are also the curtains of an extraordinary theater and the pages of an illustrated encyclopedia of knowledge. The walls of the palaces are painted with images of all the arts and sciences.

Agreed. Man just needs look in the mirror to see 2 facts. We forge our own existence from a reality that does not care whether we are here or not, and we are are not worthy of self worship. Just a pat on the back when we advance our case and a painful introspection when we don't.

Spectacularly, the night before the Holy Roman Empire fell to Napolean’s thumbing Wellington boots at Jena in September 1806, Hegel completed his Phenomenology of the Spirit. The massive tome ends, appropriately, with an ontotheological schema reminiscent of Joachim of Fiore’s announcement of a New Age of the Spirit to complete the Ages of the Father and the Son. And like Goethe, Hegel concluded that the irreversible event signaled the end of the Middle Ages.

From Joachim of Fiore to Schelling (but not Hegel), the third age was therefore announcing a Third Testament and a new Christianity—one that would now be inscribed in our hearts, and one that would be synchronized with the pulsation of religion in ourselves and indeed in our carnal and spiritual bodies. Luce Irigaray now describes the third age as:

"an age which would permit to reunite it with other traditions and to overcome the opposition between matriarchy and patriarchy (…) In the third age of the history of Judeo-Christianity, after the age of the world’s redemption, thanks to Mary and to Jesus, the task of humanity will be to become itself divine breath."

This entirely post-Christian and post-masculinist religious constellation is now obviously not the task of only one sex, one culture, or one religious tradition anymore, but is mutually shared between the world traditions beyond any artificial dichotomies or antagonisms based on intellectual pride or prestige.

Divine is the love for the other as other, divine is the praise of nature as nature, for Irigaray.Footnote41 And this is what Richard Rorty, as one of the last great American intellectuals, so beautifully described in his essay on the future of religion:

"My sense of the holy, insofar I have one, is bound with the hope that someday, any millennium now, my remote descendants will live in a global civilization in which love in pretty much the only law. (…) I have no idea how such a society could come about. It is, one might say, a mystery. This mystery, like that of the Incarnation, concerns the coming into existence of a love that is kind, patient, and endures all things."

The spiritual community of Amalricians knew and prophesized about this future and this love—when the body of humanity, and the body of nature and its beings will become impregnated with the holy breath, and thus be divinized.

The Omega Point is the subject of a belief that everything in the universe is fated to spiral towards a final point of unification. The term was coined by the French Jesuit Catholic priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955). Teilhard argued that the Omega Point resembles the Christian Logos, namely Christ, who draws all things into himself, who in the words of the Nicene Creed, is "God from God", "Light from Light", "True God from true God", and "through him all things were made". In the Book of Revelation, Christ describes himself thrice as "the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end".




Evolution
According to Teilhard, Evolution does not end with mankind and Earth's biosphere evolved before humans existed. He described evolution as a progression that begins with inanimate matter to a future state of Divine consciousness through Earth's "hominization". He also maintained that one-cell organisms develop into metazoans, or animals, but some of the members of this classification develop organisms with complex nervous systems. This group has the capability to acquire intelligence. When Homo sapiens inhabited Earth through evolution, a noosphere, the cognitive layer of existence, was created. As evolution continues, the noosphere gains coherence. Teilhard explained that this noosphere can be moved toward or constructed to be the Omega Point or the final evolutionary stage with the help of science. Teilhard refers to this process as "planetization". Eventually, the noosphere gains total dominance over the biosphere and reaches a point of complete independence from tangential energy forming a metaphysical being, coined the Omega Point.

Formal properties
  1. Humans will escape the heat death of the universe. Scientifically, this means that intelligence cannot survive. He theorizes that since radial energy is non-compliant with entropy, it escapes the collapses of forces at world's end.
  2. The Omega Point does not exist within the timeline of the universe, it occurs at the exact edge of the end of time. From that point, all sequence of existence is sucked into its being.
  3. The Omega Point can be understood as a volume shaped as a cone in which each section taken from the base to its summit decreases until it diminishes into a final point.
  4. The volume described in the Third Property must be understood as an entity with finite boundaries. Teilhard explains:
"... what would have become of humanity, if, by some remote chance, it had been free to spread indefinitely on an unlimited surface, that is to say left only to the devices of its internal affinities? Something unimaginable. ... Perhaps even nothing at all, when we think of the extreme important of the role played in its development by the forces of compression."

Technological singularity
The technological singularity is the hypothetical advent of artificial general intelligence theoretically capable of recursive self-improvement, resulting in a runaway effect to an intelligence explosion. Eric Steinhart, a proponent of "Christian transhumanism", argues there is significant overlap of ideas between the secular singularity and Teilhard's religious Omega Point. Steinhart quotes Ray Kurzweil, one of the most prominent singularitarians, who stated that "evolution moves inexorably toward our conception of God, albeit never reaching this ideal." Like Kurzweil, Teilhard predicts a period of rapid technological change that results in a merger of humanity and technology. He believes that this marks the birth of the noosphere and the emergence of the "spirit of the Earth", but the Teilhardian Singularity comes later. Unlike Kurzweil, Teilhard's singularity is marked by the evolution of human intelligence reaching a critical point in which humans ascend from "transhuman" to "posthuman". He identifies this with the Christian "parousia".

1. If humans survive, why doesn't intelligence survive? And what type of cosmic canoe lets a human ride on top of radial energy? Did I miss him redefining what a human is?
2. The term "being" requires temporal reality to define it.... so what exactly is it all being sucked into that Teilhard could possible describe or even know.
3. Again, there can be no final point. Finality is undefinable by any artifact such as a point.
4. "finite boundries" <=== oxymoron alert.

This all sounds like someone trying to convince us of things he doesn't know.

Gnosticism because of its syncretic and perennial methods is very inconsistent and often incoherent. But they are fine with that and chuck it to mysticism and keep the ball rolling.

Essentially the natural man wants to become spiritual (therefore god) through material, intellectual, technological means. Their view of God is pantheistic. God is in everything so the material means for spiritual evolution are valid.

Here, here... There is a point where the thinking fails both logic and material reality.... that's where we watch them punt with attempts at temporal analogy for non-temporal mysteries. I just doesn't work any way you try to make sense of it. It is impossible by definition.
Essentially the natural man wants to become spiritual (therefore god) through material, intellectual, technological means. Their view of God is pantheistic. God is in everything so the material means for spiritual evolution are valid.
Natural man wants to be eternal. The invention of the concept of spirituality was the only model offering them that for the longest time. It still is. So modern thinking man is dropping their desire for eternity. But those that hang onto this childishness aren't rushing to a pantheistic spiritualism to cement their drive for eternity much anymore unless they sign up to become a popsicle.. It's dying were education thrives and thriving were education dies.

Gnosticism was the desire to invent a system of justice that didn't exist in this world. Before this desire, eternity wasn't even a concept of early religious movements except for the deities and human messiah heroes. So along with the invention of a just hereafter, came an eternal hereafter as well.

So modern thinking man is dropping their desire for eternity. Here's the scary bit. That is the religion of the people who run this world.
