The Rosary

This morning I was saying a Rosary for my sister who was doing a 5 hour car journey to be our family representative at an Aunty's funeral. A thought jumped into my mind. 'I wonder if the anti Catholics are right and that reciting repetitious prayers are pagan nonsense?' I barely thought that and Jesus and Mary enveloped me in assurance in a tangible way. Dear Jesus thankyou for never failing me in my hour of need.

How does one envelope in a tangible way?

There is no Biblical admonition against using beads, a tradition used by Hindus, Muslims, even pagan Ephesians when worshipping the false diety Diana and adopted by RCism during the crusades. But, we are admonished by God,'s written Word which is useful for teaching, correcting, training and rebuking (2 Tim 3:16-17) that:

Matt 6:“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words"

Yeah, that's paganism. Mary is dead and Jesus does not permit us to contact the dead, and certainly not to pray to them. You are being deceived.

Yes, empty. Praying to a woman who has already received her reward...you know... that RC caricature of Jesus' mother. The caricature ding says has godlike attributes. You are praying to deaf ears and therefore empty phrases, empty words, worthless repetitious words..
empty phrases? what part? repeating what Angel Gabriel said?

Yes, all 59 "hail mary's" is vain (without worth or value) repetitions.
First, Jesus is not condemning repetitious prayer per se. If he were then he would be condemning himself, since he prayed multiple times, “Father . . . remove this cup . . . not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:39). But that’s absurd.

Furthermore, right after Jesus condemns the “vain repetitions” of the Gentiles, he commands the apostles, “Pray like this . . . Our Father who art in heaven . . .” Does Jesus intend for us to only say it once? Are we forbidden to repeat the Our Father? Of course not.

Finally, if we accept the objector’s interpretation of Matthew 6:7, we would have to condemn the four angels of Revelation 4:8 singing day and night without ceasing, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty.” Of course we don’t want to do that!

So what was Jesus condemning?

He was condemning Gentile prayers, which were meaningless or mindless repetitious prayers, as the Greek word battalogesete suggests. The Gentiles recited prayers only to appease their gods. They were, as the Revised Standard Versioh translates it, “empty phrases” having nothing to do with expressing one’s love for and trust in God. They would simply say the words, and that was it—they went their merry way and lived their lives as they wanted. That’s what Jesus is condemning, not repetitious prayer such as we find in the rosary.
