I started observing the dietary laws a little over 20 years ago, and within a few years I noticed that sometimes I would get sick while eating in restaurants. It took me years to finally figure out what was going on. just having some residual pork grease on a grill is more than enough to make me sick. I just don't have the constitution to digest pork anymore.
There is no doubt in my mind that none of the authors in the New Testament ever consumed pork. Pork was far worse than it is today, and the effects would have been horrific.
There's a movie out about some people who owned a zoo prior to the second world war. During the war they raised swine, and would come into town to collect food scraps to feed the pigs. They would give pork to the Jewish orphanage. The proprietor would thank them. The line that caught my attention was when he said that he couldn't eat it, but he would give it to the children; presumably because they would be able to eat it without vomiting it right back up again.
