I will never forget when at the catholic university (famous for sports these days
and where I was teaching). It was a dinner and the president of the university
was sitting right across from me, a guest from the vatican sitting right next to him to his right.
I asked him, do you think Catholicism is augustinian, a question that he liked very much..
whereas for me it confirmed they were of the same evil cloth... he answered 'but
of course, the university is Augustinian to its core'. Other theologians at the table got enthused
by that and began giving their own festschrifts to Augustine, little anecdotal gems to
impress the vatican visitor. No, I was not and am not catholic, but faculty were invited
to such events. Another time, Dussel, the famous liberation theology professor came,
giving speeches on his view of christian theology as essentially compatible to marxism.
Everyone was clapping for him too...
and I made sure to sit right next to him at the lunch and I asked him in a totally neutral
voice, where did he find in scripture compatibility to marxism, as I would like to study this...
all tongue in cheek of course. Being so huge an ego, he didn't realize I was questioning
his thesis and went into a big speech about his views, and again, all the theologians
at the table nodding their heads in homage to this rat dressed up as a christian.
