Where Christianity Diverges from Scripture

This came up in a thread recently, and I was challenged to find some example. I have a few. If anyone wants to add more, then please do!

1 Satan is under God's control

Christianity tells us that Satan is working against God, but the Bible actually makes clear that Satan is just doing God's work - thus in the last chapter of Job, it makes clear that all the troubles that befell Job were due - ultimately - to God.

2 When you die you go to heaven

Christianity tells us that when we die, if we are good, we go to heaven right then. However, the Biblical position is that the dead are all in Sheol, and the righteous do not go to heaven until the day of judgement - and in fact, rather than go to heaven, the kingdom of God will come to earth

3 The Trinity

Christianity maintains the Trinity, but it is absent from the Bible. Sure, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are mentioned in the same sentence, but no where does it say they are the same thing.

4 Give up your wealth

Jesus was clear that his follower should give up their material goods, and trust in God to provide. Luke 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. ... Christians (besides monks and nuns) do not do that.

5 Die that day

God told Adam if he ate the fruit, he would die that day. Christians pretend he meant something else, as Adam did not die the day he ate the fruit.

6 Fulfill

Christians pretend "fulfill" has some weird meaning so that Jesus fulfilling laws means those laws no longer need to be observed.

7 Generation

In a similar manner, Christians pretend "generation" has some weird meaning so that when Jesus said "This Generation Shall Not Pass", he was not wrong.

8 Flat earth and firmament

The Bible is clear in numerous places that the earth is flat; the sun, moon and stars are just points of light on a solid dome.

9 Snake in Eden

Christianity pretends the snake in the garden of Eden was Satan, but the text does not say that, and the fact that God cursed all snakes for what the snake did makes clear this was not Satan.

10 References to Satan

In fact, Christianity claims many verses are about Satan, when this is simply not true. Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:12-19, for example, are purely about the king of Babylon and the king of Tyre respectively.

Why do you think you can haz bible study amongst atheists?

Ain't nobody got time for that.

Correcting all your confused beliefs about God is the only worthwhile thing here and you are rabidly anti-God.

You can gnash your teeth over "Christianity" all you want, it means nothing. The RCC has committed enough adultery to cast a blackout over "Christianity" And that is just one group. Don't forget Geneva, and can't forget the Luther people.

Lots of condemnation to go around. The church is first up in the judgement, you know that, right? Whoa to the groups that follow.

I have no interest in reading your post. The title of your OP is enough for me to state my position. When and if your somewhat suspect understanding of "Christianity" diverges from scripture, I'll side with scripture every time. I'm simply not interested in your biased interpretation of Christianity.

I started this thread because I was asked to. I am not gnashing my teeth over it at all. That is just your projection.

This is not about what Christian leaders do, it is about how Christianity sometimes makes claims that are at odds with the Bible.

But you cannot actually show that anything I said is a false quote, quote-mine or a strawman , so you are just going with accusation by innuendo. Another fail.

Perhaps the author reasoned that the Lord ultimately brought Job's troubles since Satan could not have brought them without His okay?

II COR 12: 7-10: God allowed Satan to give Paul a thorn in the flesh to keep Paul humble. It's almost like Satan's punishment, effected by his defeat at Calvary, is to be God's useful idiot.

Any one of your examples would make for some interesting discussion, but it is this one that jumped out at me since it seems to infer the divine character in the narrative is mistaken at best or lying at worst in threatening the man. That does not strike me as the likely intent of the author, who was a devotee of the Israelite deity. Both your implied interpretation of the text and the one you critique err in taking the Hebrew ביום literally instead of as an idiomatic expression for "when". This meaning of ביום can be established both in the immediate context of the garden narrative (2:4) and in the similar threat levelled at Shimei by Solomon (1 Kgs 2:37; cf. 2:42). We agree that understanding the Genesis text as a reference to immediate spiritual death is incorrect, but your critique of this exegetical mistake is flawed by making the same assumption about the literalness of ביום that your interlocutors do.

Kind regards,
Jonathan

1 Satan is under God's control

Satan is the God of this world...

2 Corinthians 4:4
"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

The adversary.

2 When you die you go to heaven

The dead either go to Abraham's Bosom or Torments...

Luke 16:23
"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom."

No, Abraham's Bosom was not 'emptied out' when Jesus rose from the dead.

3 The Trinity

The Godhead is explained here...

Romans 1:20
"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"

The problem is, most folks do not understand the verse.
  • Godhead = Trinity
  • Invisible Things = Word of God
  • Things that are made = Matter (I.e. the Atom)
  • Without Excuse = Any Third Grader can understand the Trinity
The Word of God is the Unified Field Software Code by which all things are manifested from...

Hebrews 11:3
"Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

The Trinity is simply a representation of the generic construct of the Atom.
  • Father = Neutron
  • Word = Proton
  • Holy Ghost = Electron
Yes, just like the movie The Matrix. Matter has 'Code' behind it... like a Simulation. It is not my fault everyone on the planet is completely ignorant of this fact. Deal with it.

4 Give up your wealth

Many Christians are hypocrites. What else is new?

5 Die that day

Adam did die that day, physically and totally. So did his Wife Ishshah. God re-created them as Adam 2.0 and Eve. Christians have no clue what they are reading.

7 Generation

The Human Race as it exists currently... i.e. before the Transhuman/Alien Hybridization change takes place...

Daniel 2:43
"And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay."

8 Flat earth and firmament

The Bible does not teach a 'Flat Earth'.

9 Snake in Eden

Satan was turned into a Serpent *AFTER* the Fall. Not a 'snake', but rather Sperm. God turned Satan into the Seed of Man. Again, Christians have no clue what they are reading.

Genesis 3:15
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."

  • Thy Seed = Sperm
  • Her Seed = Ovum
10 References to Satan

It is both. Satan is Spirit that incarnates into physical form. It has happened several times already. Each incarnation is an Antichrist and head of the Beast/Dragon. We have one more incarnation to go.

Perhaps the author reasoned that the Lord ultimately brought Job's troubles since Satan could not have brought them without His okay?

Here:

Job 42:11 Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they sympathized with him and comforted him for all the adversities that the Lord had brought on him. ...

It is quite clear that all the troubles Job suffered were brought on by God - Satan was merely acting as God's instrument.

No, Abraham's Bosom was not 'emptied out' when Jesus rose from the dead.
Luke 16 is a parable, it would be dubious to say it was literally true. Do you think people in hell can actually chat with Abraham?

Rad Paul, in particular 1 Cor 15. He is looking forward to the day of judgement, when the last trump will sound, and the righteous wil all be resurrected. That is the concept of an afterlife the Bible promotes.

The Godhead is explained here...

Romans 1:20
"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"

The problem is, most folks do not understand the verse.

So your argument is that the Bible mentions the Trinity if we redefine a word to mean Trinity.

This is a great illustration of what I am talking about. the Bible never mentions Trinity, so Christianity has forced that on the text, and does so by pretending "Godhead" means "Trinity". It does not. There is nothing in the Bible to suggest any of the authors had even heard of the concept or that Jesus ever mentioned it.

It was invented later.

The Trinity is simply a representation of the generic construct of the Atom.

  • Holy Ghost = Electron
Yes, just like the movie The Matrix. Matter has 'Code' behind it... like a Simulation. It is not my fault everyone on the planet is completely ignorant of this fact. Deal with it.
None of which is in the bible, which is my point.

Many Christians are hypocrites. What else is new?
But that is not what I am talking about.

Jesus was clear that his followers should give up all their wealth. Christianity says you do not have to. I am pointing out that again the Bible says one thing, Christianity says something else.

Adam did die that day, physically and totally. So did his Wife Ishshah. God re-created them as Adam 2.0 and Eve. Christians have no clue what they are reading.
That is a very unorthodox reading, but my point still stanbds.

The text says God told Adam he would die that day, and the text says Adam did not die that day. You pretend it says he did die and was recreated, orthodox Christians say it was a different sort of death. Either way you are both projecting your own beliefs on to a text that does not say that.

But the text does not say that. The text says a generation; those people alive at that time.

The Bible does not teach a 'Flat Earth'.
It does, but this post is getting long enough, so I am not going to list all the verses.

Satan was turned into a Serpent *AFTER* the Fall. Not a 'snake', but rather Sperm. God turned Satan into the Seed of Man. Again, Christians have no clue what they are reading.
And where does it say that in the Bible?

It does not. Another point where your belief diverges from what the bible actually says.

Genesis 3:15
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."

  • Thy Seed = Sperm
  • Her Seed = Ovum
What it actually says is there will be enmity between mankind and snakes. The seed of the first snake is all snakes, who bite ankles because they crawl on the ground having been cursed. The seed of the first couple is mankind.

In what sense is there enmity between sperm and the ovum? In what sense does sperm bite the ankles of the ovum?

So how do you understand it? What was God saying would happen, and over what sort of time scale?

I get what you are saying about the author, but he must have realised that nothing bad actually happened when they ate the fruit, because that is right there in the story. The Fall was an indirect consequence, and was due to God punishing them for eating the fruit. The best I can see is that God intended to kill them if they disobeyed him, but in the end was merciful, and just caused the Fall, but the text does not actually say that.

So how do you understand it? What was God saying would happen, and over what sort of time scale?
The story in 1 Kings 2 to which I earlier referred is informative. There Solomon threatens Shimei with the words "And it will happen that when (Hebrew: ביום) you leave and cross the Kidron Valley, know for certain that you will surely die, your blood will be on your head" (v37). Hopefully we can agree that Solomon is not suggesting that the man will somehow drop dead the moment he leaves the city of Jerusalem, rather, that he has brought an inevitable death sentence upon himself... indeed, the man journeys to Gath, collects his runaway slaves, returns to Jerusalem, is summoned before the king and only then executed (vs39-46). The deity of the garden narrative similarly warns the man that "when (Hebrew: ביום) you eat from [the tree of knowledge of good and evil] you will surely die" (Gen 2:17). Just as Shimei does not die on leaving Jerusalem, the man does not die eating the forbidden fruit... but like Shimei's boundary crossing, engaging in the proscribed action enacts the inevitable death sentence that was threatened, which the deity appears in person to spell out to him (3:19b).

I get what you are saying about the author, but he must have realised that nothing bad actually happened when they ate the fruit, because that is right there in the story.
The couple is immediately ashamed of their nakedness (3:7 {cf. 2:25}), a rift forms between them that will only worsen (3:12, 16b), the woman will experience pain in childbearing (3:16a) and the man will now have to toil painfully in order to provide food (3:17b-19a)... all of this leading to death (3:19b) --- I don't think it can be said that "nothing bad actually happened when they ate the fruit", even in the immediate aftermath.

The Fall was an indirect consequence, and was due to God punishing them for eating the fruit. The best I can see is that God intended to kill them if they disobeyed him, but in the end was merciful, and just caused the Fall, but the text does not actually say that.
There is so much later theological baggage tied to the contemporary concept of "The Fall" that I would caution against using this terminology in discussing what the author of the garden narrative intended... indeed, the spiritualizing of the couple's death is all wrapped up in this mistaken approach to the text, which is a practical origins story explaining why humans wear clothes, why they are at enmity with snakes, why men lord it over women, and why we all eventually die.

Kind regards,
Jonathan

Okay... but they went on to live a long time. There were not immortal before eating the fruit, as they had not eating from the Tree of Life:

Gen 3:22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—

So in what sense did eating the fruit cause death, whatever the timescale?

The couple is immediately ashamed of their nakedness (3:7 {cf. 2:25}), a rift forms between them that will only worsen (3:12, 16b), the woman will experience pain in childbearing (3:16a) and the man will now have to toil painfully in order to provide food (3:17b-19a)... all of this leading to death (3:19b) --- I don't think it can be said that "nothing bad actually happened when they ate the fruit", even in the immediate aftermath.
They do immediately become ashamed of their nakedness, I will concede that, but even that can be seen as a coming of age; they went from being children to being adults - and being able to tell right from wrong is elsewhere considered an indicator of progress to adulthood (Isa 7:16).

However, the other effects read as God choosing to inflict them on Adam and Eve as a punishment, and not as a direct consequence of eating the fruit. With regards to pain in child birth:

Gen 3:16 To the woman He said,
“I will greatly multiply
Your pain [g]in childbirth,

And yet Job 42 makes clear Satan was acting as an instrument of God.

Obviously. So what? This is Bible 101 stuff. Are we all supposed to be shocked and aghast as if these are Great Revelations?

Luke 16 is a parable, it would be dubious to say it was literally true. Do you think people in hell can actually chat with Abraham?

So the word 'Parable' to you means it is not True? I take the Bible very literally, so yes, the event actually happened precisely as stated in the Bible. I have no issue with it whatsoever.

Rad Paul, in particular 1 Cor 15. He is looking forward to the day of judgement, when the last trump will sound, and the righteous wil all be resurrected. That is the concept of an afterlife the Bible promotes.

Sounds good to me.

So your argument is that the Bible mentions the Trinity if we redefine a word to mean Trinity.

My Bible uses the word 'Godhead', so that is what I prefer. If folks wish to use the word Trinity in its place, that is for them to answer as to why they do that.

There are plenty of discussions about that. I see no point in starting a new one.

None of which is in the bible, which is my point.

Actually it is. I even posted verses to prove that the Godhead/Trinity is representative of the generic construct of the Atom (Three in One).

You just posted a falsehood, yet as others have pointed out, you are not here to learn and correct your mistakes.

I already knew you would dismiss and ignore the wealth of Wisdom I presented. This shows what Spirit you are of. You failed the test.

By the way...

For those those that do not wish to remain in ignorance like the OP, I have prepared a presentation that goes into this subject in great detail here...

The first vision of Ezekiel is all about the Godhead as Atomic Construct. The 'Wheels' are Electron Orbitals (Shells). The Eyes are Electrons (Spirit/Holy Ghost).

The High Priest Breastplate is representative of the Twelve Particles of Matter in the Standard Model.

The Four Beasts are representative of the Four Forces of Nature. Too bad this information is over OP's head. We could have had an intelligent discussion.

I will not even bother responding to the rest. OP starts a debate and then replies with...

"It does, but this post is getting long enough, so I am not going to list all the verses."

In other words, OP's debate is "I'm right you're wrong". Whatever.

Oh, and this is for those that wish to understand what 'Enmity' means with regards to the Seed of the Serpent...

Flat Earth is disproved in there as well. Again, the videos are for those that do not act like Dunces in the classroom but are looking for serious answers to the deepest questions we all have.

Good luck everyone.
