As most of you are aware, we had a crash to forums and were down for over two days a while back. We did have to do an upgrade to the vbulletin software to fix the forums and that has created changes, VB no longer provide the hybrid or threaded forums. There are some issues/changes to the forums we are not able to fix or change. Also note the link address change, please let friends and posters know of the changed link to the forums. For now this is the only link available, https://forums.carm.org/vb5/ but if clicking on forum on carm.org homepage it will now send you to this link. (edited to add https: now working.

Again, we are working through some of the posting and viewing issues to learn how to post with the changes, you will have to check and test the different features, icons that have changed. You may also want to go to profile settings, since many of the notifications, information in profile, also to update/edit your avatar by clicking on avatar space, pull down arrow next to login for user settings.

Edit to add "How to read forums, to make it easier."
Pull down arrow next to login name upper right select profile, or user settings when page opens to profile, select link in tab that says Account. Then select/choose options, go down to Conversation Detail Options, Select Display mode Posts, NOT Activity, that selection of Posts will make the pages of discussions go to last post on last page rather than out of order that happens if you choose activity threads. Then be sure to go to bottom and select SAVE Changes in your profile options. You can then follow discussions by going through the pages, to the last page having latest responses. Then click on the other links Privacy, Notifications, to select viewing options, the forums get easier if you open all the tabs or links in your profile, user settings and select options. To join Super Member, pull down arrow next to login name, select User Settings and then click on tab/link at top that says Subscriptions.

Thank you for your patience and God Bless.

  • Airplane Produces Thrust Without Any Moving Parts

I think I understand the concept a bit, but if anyone can break it down a bit more ..for dummies.. Iíd appreciate the attempt.

    Kinda nifty.

The best description I've found is here.

    <edited to add the following>

If I understand it right, the power source is used to move electrons from one electrode to the other. This creates a strong positive charge at the first electrode and a strong negative charge at the second. The positively charged electrode strips electrons from the air molecules (ionizes them), giving them a positive charge. They are thus propelled from the positively charged electrode to the negatively charged electrode, taking a bunch of neutral molecules with them. At the negatively charged electrode, they get their electrons back. The net motion of the air provides thrust in the opposite direction.

Thx. I have a though time imagining ionic actions.

        I found a description ---- > here.

        A diagram is included.

" In their electroaerodynamic plane the MIT researchers used electrodes shaped as filaments set at a +20,000 V at the front of the plane, which accelerate ions to aerodynamic foil-shaped opposing electrodes at -20,000 V sending an ionic wind towards the back of the plane. They then applied geometric programming to their design, an approach often used to optimize a given parameter for conventional aircraft. Barrett and colleagues used it to optimize the design of their plane for minimum wing span, which corresponds to a minimum aircraft weight. The result was a 5 m wingspan plane, which the researchers made from a combination of traditional materials Ė such as balsa wood and foam Ė and more high-tech carbon fibres and Kevlar. "

Additional information is supplied within the linked article by Nature.
"The exact sciences also start from the assumption that in the end it will always be possible to understand nature, even in every new field of experience, but that we make no a priori assumptions about the meaning of the word "understand"."

        Heisenberg

Noted in the link: "If it sounds like science fictionÖ well, thatís about right. MITís Stephen Barrett explains that he took his inspiration directly from Star Trek."

But , SB apparently did not realize that GR (Gene Roddenberry) got HIS ideas from already known and theorized science.

Yet in the same link, this is 'almost' recognized by these statements : "He didnít discover the principle that ended up making his teamís craft fly ó itís been known about for nearly a century, but has never been able to be applied successfully to flight."
          and
"Essentially what youíre doing is making negatively charged air flow in a direction you choose. This phenomenon was recognized in the í20s, and in the í60s they even attempted some thrust tests using it. But they were only able to get about 1 percent of the input electricity to work as thrust. Thatís inefficient, to say the least."

So, as other things also (like the famous tri-corder of 'Dr.Bones", (taken from similar devices doctor's had been using for several decades in Germany) ,

it was already known and published technology, in fact and in theory/ development .
