As most of you are aware, we had a crash to forums and were down for over two days a while back. We did have to do an upgrade to the vbulletin software to fix the forums and that has created changes, VB no longer provide the hybrid or threaded forums. There are some issues/changes to the forums we are not able to fix or change. Also note the link address change, please let friends and posters know of the changed link to the forums. For now this is the only link available, https://forums.carm.org/vb5/ but if clicking on forum on carm.org homepage it will now send you to this link. (edited to add https: now working.

Again, we are working through some of the posting and viewing issues to learn how to post with the changes, you will have to check and test the different features, icons that have changed. You may also want to go to profile settings, since many of the notifications, information in profile, also to update/edit your avatar by clicking on avatar space, pull down arrow next to login for user settings.

Edit to add "How to read forums, to make it easier."
Pull down arrow next to login name upper right select profile, or user settings when page opens to profile, select link in tab that says Account. Then select/choose options, go down to Conversation Detail Options, Select Display mode Posts, NOT Activity, that selection of Posts will make the pages of discussions go to last post on last page rather than out of order that happens if you choose activity threads. Then be sure to go to bottom and select SAVE Changes in your profile options. You can then follow discussions by going through the pages, to the last page having latest responses. Then click on the other links Privacy, Notifications, to select viewing options, the forums get easier if you open all the tabs or links in your profile, user settings and select options. To join Super Member, pull down arrow next to login name, select User Settings and then click on tab/link at top that says Subscriptions.

Thank you for your patience and God Bless.

In relation to chronology, the book of Judges brings much confusion if you try to fit the given years end to end. Has anyone found commentary or articles about the judges being concurrent or overlapping?

In his book A Survey of Israel's History, Leon Wood observed: "Judges 3:30-4:1 implies that Shamgar judged during the 80 years of peace following Ehud's deliverance from the Moabites. Judges 10:7 implies that Jephthah, occupied with the Ammonites east of the Jordan, and Samson, occupied with the Philistines on the east, were contemporary in activity. Certain of the lesser judges, because they were active in particular, separated areas, could well have worked at the same time; as, for instance, Tola, who judged in Isaachar (Judg. 10:1-2), and Jair, who judged across the Jordan in Gilead (Judg. 10:3-5)" (p. 207).

Concurrent to what, and overlapping what? The book of Judges comes directly after Joshua, and Joshua is the second judge to Moses. All of the other judges are sequential. The last official judge is Samuel. then it switches to the kings, due to the rebellion of Israel against their King - Jesus/Yahweh.

          Additional references are:

From the Oxford Companion to the Bible, edited by Metzger and Coogan, an article titled "The Book of Judges" by Leslie J. Hoppe, OFM, Professor of Old Testament, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL, as follows (from p. 397) "The Book's chronology is a problem since the sum of the periods mentioned in it comes to about four hundred years. The Exodus is usually dated to the 13th century BCE and the anointing of Saul to the middle of the 11th century; consequently, the era of judges as calculated by the book is far too long. The book presents the subjects of its narratives as referring to all Israel when originally these figures were associated with particular tribes. It is not possible to relate the stories of these savior-judges to each other chronologically. The book of Judges is a collection of stories about ancient tribal heroes; the chronological sequence of these stories is certainly artificial, and the fact that the total number of heroes is twelve also suggests editorial design."

An enlightening footnote is found in the ESV Reformation Study Bible, copyright 2005 by Ligonier Ministries, for 1Kings6:1 in reference to the timeline given there, as follows (in part), "Some take it (480) as a figurative number representing twelve generations of forty years each. Others, on the basis of ancient Near Eastern custom, argue that the figure is the total of a sequence of periods, some of them overlapping."
