Is there actually a "culture war" on?

People disagree strongly with each other in contemporary America, but that's always been true of America. Heck, that's been true of every civilization since the dawn of recorded history. You can find evidence of people arguing fiercely with each other over their beliefs and values in ancient India, China, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, etc.

The term "culture war" suggests there's something going on today that hasn't always been going on. What is that?

I would say that it has always been going on. Now it just has a name

Censorship has to be added to that.
Censorship has always been around. It's insignificant to the sheer weight of information available. It's impossible for anyone to process more than a tiny fraction, which means arguments between people who have no common point of contact.

You had mentioned the Internet....."What has changed is the internet."......which come to control of social platforms and the culture being pushed and the culture being denied a voice.

It also has the means to spread and exchange information, and disinformation quickly. What has changed is the internet.
There are other factors that have changed disagreement into a "culture war":

1) people are using govt to block views they don't like or to push alternative ideas

With the dismantling of Roe v. Wade has come a push to crack down on speech and information about reproductive rights.

Now that abortion has been banned in more than a dozen states, abortion opponents want to stoke confusion about the legality of not just having an abortion, but even of discussing the procedure. The ultimate goal seems to be ensuring that women are unclear about their options to obtain an abortion or contraception, in their home state or elsewhere.

Signs of this trend can be found around the country. In Nebraska, law enforcement obtained a warrant to search a teenager’s private Facebook messages, in which she told her mother of her urgent desire to end her pregnancy. The mother is now being prosecuted on charges of helping her daughter abort the pregnancy by giving advice about abortion pills.

Proposed legislation in South Carolina would have made it unlawful to provide information about abortions. In September, the University of Idaho issued guidance that it might be illegal for employees to “promote” birth control or abortion. In Texas, two abortion funds (groups that help people pay and travel for abortions) this year received deposition demand letters from people tied to anti-abortion lawmakers for information on anyone who has “aided and abetted” the procedure.

2) people are increasingly likely to protest while heavily armed, which stiffles civil discourse.

Across the country, openly carrying a gun in public is no longer just an exercise in self-defense — increasingly it is a soapbox for elevating one’s voice and, just as often, quieting someone else’s...

In June, armed demonstrations around the United States amounted to nearly one a day...

Whether at the local library, in a park or on Main Street, most of these incidents happen where Republicans have fought to expand the ability to bear arms in public, a movement bolstered by a recent Supreme Court ruling on the right to carry firearms outside the home. The loosening of limits has occurred as violent political rhetoric rises and police in some places fear bloodshed among an armed populace on a hair trigger.

But the effects of more guns in public spaces have not been evenly felt. A partisan divide — with Democrats largely eschewing firearms and Republicans embracing them — has warped civic discourse. Deploying the Second Amendment in service of the First Amendment has become a way to buttress a policy argument, a sort of silent, if intimidating, bullhorn...

A New York Times analysis of more than 700 armed demonstrations found that at about 77% of them, people openly carrying guns represented right-wing views, such as opposition to LGBTQ rights and abortion access, hostility to racial justice rallies and support for former President Donald Trump’s lie of winning the 2020 election.

The records, from January 2020 to last week, were compiled by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a nonprofit that tracks political violence around the world.

The essential characteristic of the internet is that it isn't controlled. Even totalitarian regime's struggle to control it. It's hilarious that you imagine that you live under heavy handed state censorship. Information exchange has never been so free or so easy.

You mean like how Elon Musk doesn’t want Kanye West’s Nazi propaganda on his platform?

Seriously

There was plenty of medical misinformation spread around during COVID. Certain platforms, like this one, encouraged it.

They say if you tell a lie loud and long enough people will believe it....You are a good lier.

The Hunter Biden laptop story was censored. Fact.

Elon Musk Releases THE TWITTER FILES: How Twitter Collaborated With "The Biden Team" To Cover Up The Hunter Laptop Story (article)

I can't wait to hear how you try to whitewash the Hunter laptop story.

As it turns out....The files showed the Biden team was asking to have people suspended, including regarding people who were posting information that had been found on the Hunter Biden laptop. (article)

You have been refuted....We are currently discovering and proving illegal heavy handed state censorship.

Such as vitamin D does nothing to help stop Covid.

As another example of culture censorship....and punishment for going against the narrative:

FTC Fines Missouri Doctor 500 Billion For Promoting Vitamin D During Covid (article)

Exactly. The information that is exchanged isn't necessarily accurate or harmless.

Censored so heavily that no-one has stopped talking about it, to the point where people can make money out of gullible fools by making stuff up about it. There's so much stuff on the internet about Hunter's lap top and Hilary's emails that you could spend the rest of your life reading nothing else. This is not censorship. This is free for all.

What you are complaining about is that other people are getting information that's different from yours. You want them to get the same as you. It's you who are in favour of censorship.

Such a strange reply....it has been proven that the Hunter laptop was hushed up. Censored. For you to deny that now known proven fact shows that you don't live in a world of reality.

And since the left is now in power they have more power to do that.
