Getting Encouragement from Discouragement.

We are not the only ones who, at times, get discouraged.

Even the greatest heroes of the faith, sometimes, get despondent
and even want to give up and die.

Moses . . .
. . .talking to God:
"If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me --
if I have found favor in your eyes -- and do not let me face my own
ruin."__Moses Numbers 11:15
{Read more Numbers chapter 11}

Elijah . . .
"went a days journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom tree,
sat down under it and prayed that he might die. I have had enough
LORD, he said. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."
1 Kings 19:4
{Read more 1 Kings chapters 18 and 19}

However . . .

The Sovereign God, "the God who gives endurance and encouragement"
{Romans 15:5} restored both Moses and Elijah to good hope, faith and
encouragement . . .

. . . and God will always do the same for us also -- when we get discouraged.

Moses and Elijah, who at times became temporarily discouraged, were restored
by God to great faith, vigor and courage.

Moses was a great man and was in relation to the nation of Israel "sent to be their
ruler and deliverer by God Himself." {Acts 7:35}

Elijah was a great hero of the faith and the Sovereign God used him mightily
to do the extraordinary.

Lastly, these two great heroes of the faith were tremendously honored by the
Sovereign God Himself when they met and talked with the Lord Jesus at His
Transfiguration.

Regarding the Lord Jesus at His Transfiguration:
"the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became as bright as a flash
of lighting. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with
Jesus." Luke 9:29-30

What a great honor for Moses and Elijah --men who in the past, and in a moment
of human weakness, had wanted to give up and die -- now fully restored and greatly
honored by God.

"Have faith in God."__The Lord Jesus {Mark 11:22}

I take it you've posted all this because you think or hope it will have an effect on atheists. If so it just shows you have no idea what atheists think nor why they think it.

It might be better if you started a thread asking atheists what would convince them of God's existence, and then see if you have any evidence or argument to give in return.

Sure, I have been discouraged, but blaming it on an unevidenced boogieman like Satan is paranoia. The idea that belief that some other unevidenced super being is going to fix everything if only I put faith in it is the essence of giving up and self destructive.
What is your point?

I have been both discouraged to despair and restored to elation in my life. God wasn't necessary for, or the cause of either.

And yes... I have a longing for God. I'm just convinced that the narrow and implausible Judaic and Christian tradition as depicted in the Bible is not even close to any definition of one.

Well, do ya punk?

I've never commended you on getting so dressed up for your CARM picture. You look quite dapper. Does the tux come with a walking cane accessory? You look like you're ready to do a rendition of "Puttin' on the Ritz."

Oh, I just remembered. Gus has had me on "ignore" for years now. Could someone be so kind as to pass the compliment along to him? I always kind of liked the guy.

I'm not hanging out with Satan? If I believed in Satan then I'd believe in God.
I do like the idea of a God but liking an idea doesn't make it true.

Its all around you. It is everywhere. But because its everywhere
the befuddled human race can't see it -- can't really see it. And
what is it that they can't really see? It's DEATH.

DEATH was never intended to be normal. DEATH ends in the
end of all that you love. Humans who accept that as just a normal
part of life have been totally brainwashed into accepting something
that is anti-beauty, anti-good, anti-hope anti-enjoyment.

The Lord Jesus made a way where you can defeat DEATH and not die.

You can continue to live forever.

If you turn that down you are out of your mind. If you say no to that you
are embracing the irrational and the absurd.

According to the bible death was always a part of creation.
I'm yet to see anyone not dying. Believers or non-believers.
You can claim anything you want for Jesus.
I see no reason to believe any of those claims.
It is absurd to agree to a belief that has no verifiable basis.

Its only 4:28 minutes and its very catchy.
"I'm so glad Jesus lifted me."
Go the 4:28 minutes and tell me how you explain what you see and hear?

I take it you've posted all this because you think or hope it will have an effect on atheists. If so it just shows you have no idea what atheists think nor why they think it.
Well, I guess so - it does show what you've mentioned.

I would submit, however, that he never had any interest in what atheists think, nor why they think it. He's certainly spent enough time posting here to see atheists explaining such things. And yet he still seems not to have absorbed any of it.

We (online) atheists really need to learn to recognize when (online) Christians are talking AT people, rather than talking with or to us. It's very easy to recognize these things in real life, yet text is more difficult to detect unreasonableness in.

The internet would be significantly better if we gave these people the audience of one they're looking for. They speak to feel better about themselves - not to save unbelievers or reach the lost (et al). They're talking to themselves (and perhaps to other Christians who identify with the methodology, but perhaps that should be left for a different thread).

This person is ignoring us, and has been doing so for years now.

We should be learning from that.

I take your points but what else can I do but try using reason or just ignore this sort of post?

It wasn't too long ago that said poster was a little more reasonably interactive, but then he disappeared for a while and came back as we see today. Whether something changed in him or he just reverted to his true self I don't know.

Truth be told, I get embarrassed when I post stuff like that. People here should be free from "constructive" criticism to sincerely talk with whomever they want.

I just get frustrated by people who pretend to be interested in talking with others, but in reality, are not (re. this thread's author). I wish there was another way to solve the problem short of ignoring them.
