How do we tell that "the beginning of birth pains" are actually at some specified point in time when there has never been, AFAIK, a time without nation rising against nation, and famines and earthquakes in various places?

These earthquakes are a result of nation rising against nation.

Revelation 6

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

These earthquakes are a result of nation rising against nation.
Which earthquakes? Do you mean the ones mentioned below? If so, then the problem is still how do we tell which earthquakes that actually happen are the ones mentioned below?

Which earthquakes, and how would you prove it?

Because the Ancient Greeks blamed earthquakes on sodomy, and I don't know whom to believe...
Because they go together.

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains." (Matthew 24:7-8)

The things Jesus spoke of in Mathew 24 are also mentioned in Daniel 11.In fact Jesus mentions Daniel in mat 24.

After the king of the south attacks the king of the norths armed forces in Jerusalem, you will know it's about to hit the fan.

Daniel 11
40 “At the time of the end the king of the South will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Cushites[e] in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many

I don't believe Jerusalem will be the only city the armed forces place the abomination that causes desolation in.Im sure many cities will be laid waste.

Jesus was talking to the disciples about the things that would take place in Israel in Mat 24.
He even talks about those in Judea fleeing to the mountains at that time.He had stated what they are fleeing from and where they are fleeing to.

Mathew 24
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand).

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

According to Daniel 11,the abomination that causes desolation is placed in Jerusalem by the armed forces of the north. The people in Judea flee to the mountains at that time.In revelation we find them in the mountains underground. They have went underground when that abomination which causes jerusalems desolation is placed in Jerusalem by the armed forces.

Revelation 6
15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

OK, the earthquakes are the ones in Israel. So, the problem is still how do we tell that "the beginning of birth pains" are actually some particular earthquake in Israel? Does any earthquake in Israel qualify? Could there be an earthquake in Israel that would *not* qualify as the beginning of birth pains?

I don't have a problem with it.
In Mathew 24 and Daniel 11,the persecution of the saints in Israel takes place first.
Then in both Mathew 24 and Daniel 11,the war begins. That is when the abomination that causes jerusalems desolation is placed in Jerusalem by the armed forces of the north.
Then those in Judea shall flee.

Nation rises against nation, and then those in Judea flee.

Zech 14
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Correlation is not causation.

When the armed forces place the abomination that causes Jerusalems desolation, the ground will quake.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand).

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened

I believe Jesus' statement refers to an obvious increase intensity and frequency, but the duration and period were not specified. The concept might suggest a situation where a person is observing a large shelf or wall cloud approaching, for instance, with enough time to check the records and compare, and afterward understands the differences in severity and frequency.

If ^this^ occurs once every 25 years - no big deal. However, if sightings dramatically increase in frequency and intensity it's a good idea to prepare for a rough ride.
