The Book of Abraham

1714046767975.png

Joseph Smith wrote, at the ending his exclamations...."Abraham is reasoning upon the principles of Astronomy, in the king’s court."
Again with Joseph virtually getting everything wrong in the first 6 figures, there is no merit here to his assertion, nor does it state in any of the Egyptain writing on the vignette anything about Abraham or astronomy.

The lower writing below their feet reads...

Rhodes...." The gods of the West, the gods of the cavern, [20] the gods of the south, north, west, and east say: [21] May Osiris, Hôr, justified, prosper. [22] Make (?) . . . summon. " Here
Ritner...."

“The gods of the West, the gods of the cavern,[ 356] the gods of the south, north, west, and east say: May Osiris Hor, justified, born of Taykhebyt, prosper.”

Joseph got is deeply wrong, not even close.

In review, here are Michael Rhodes translations in the quote that Gordon and Ralf championed....all of which contradict Joseph's translation, which proves that some LDS scholars and researchers are of the same opinion as I, and just about any other person that has done any general study of the subject. It is easy to come to this conclusion.

Text Accompanying the Vignette at the End of the Book of Breathings Text

Presumably the original of Facsimile 3 came at the end of the Book of Breathings text (not necessarily the end of the papyrus). A tentative translation of the text follows.

Bottom line: [19]

The gods of the West, the gods of the cavern, [20] the gods of the south, north, west, and east say: [21] May Osiris, Hôr, justified, prosper. [22] Make (?) . . . summon.

Line to the Right of Figure 2:

The great Isis, [23] mother of the god. [24]

The Three Lines to the Right of Figure 1:

(1) Words spoken by Osiris, the Foremost of the Westerners: (2) May Osiris, Hôr, abide at (3) the side of the throne of his greatness.

Line in Front of Figure 4:

(1) Ma’at . . . [25]

The Two Lines in Front of Figure 5: [26]

There is a lot more to discuss about facsimile 3. And hopefully we can get back to it. But I am now going on to facsimile 2.

EXPLANATION

Fig. 1. Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh.

Fig. 2. Stands next to Kolob, called by the Egyptians Oliblish, which is the next grand governing creation near to the celestial or the place where God resides; holding the key of power also, pertaining to other planets; as revealed from God to Abraham, as he offered sacrifice upon an altar, which he had built unto the Lord.

Fig. 3. Is made to represent God, sitting upon his throne, clothed with power and authority; with a crown of eternal light upon his head; representing also the grand Key-words of the Holy Priesthood, as revealed to Adam in the Garden of Eden, as also to Seth, Noah, Melchizedek, Abraham, and all to whom the Priesthood was revealed.

Fig. 4. Answers to the Hebrew word Raukeeyang, signifying expanse, or the firmament of the heavens; also a numerical figure, in Egyptian signifying one thousand; answering to the measuring of the time of Oliblish, which is equal with Kolob in its revolution and in its measuring of time.

Fig. 5. Is called in Egyptian Enish-go-on-dosh; this is one of the governing planets also, and is said by the Egyptians to be the Sun, and to borrow its light from Kolob through the medium of Kae-e-vanrash, which is the grand Key, or, in other words, the governing power, which governs fifteen other fixed planets or stars, as also Floeese or the Moon, the Earth and the Sun in their annual revolutions. This planet receives its power through the medium of Kli-flos-is-es, or Hah-ko-kau-beam, the stars represented by numbers 22 and 23, receiving light from the revolutions of Kolob.

Fig. 6. Represents this earth in its four quarters.

Fig. 7. Represents God sitting upon his throne, revealing through the heavens the grand Key-words of the Priesthood; as, also, the sign of the Holy Ghost unto Abraham, in the form of a dove.

Fig. 8. Contains writings that cannot be revealed unto the world; but is to be had in the Holy Temple of God.

Fig. 9. Ought not to be revealed at the present time.

Fig. 10. Also.

Fig. 11. Also. If the world can find out these numbers, so let it be. Amen.

Figures 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 will be given in the own due time of the Lord.

The above translation is given as far as we have any right to give at the present time.

This one has more to go through that Facsimile 3, but I'll go slow. This is what is called a "hypocephalus," which literally means "under the head." This is a round disk representing the sun. It was placed under the head of the mummy, and was not in scroll form. They were/are common and fairly standardized. The writing around the disk is accept for the persons name equally standard.

The past from above is from the current BoA, however an earlier facsimile shows that the original had missing parts (lacuna's). This is from the Joseph Smith papers, and Kirtland Egyptain Papers.

I will next go through each exclamations and see how much Joseph got right.

Ralf....(or any one else)

Figure 1 is in the center of the Hypocephalus (disk). JS translated this a Kolob the star nearest to God, as taught by the church. He stated Egyptians called this "Jah-oh-eh."

Again these Hypocephali are standardized to large degree, some have more information yet the information is basically the same. If you see post #184, in the two other disks I pasted you will see the same scene or figure. It is the God Khnum depicted with 4 heads representing (looking towards the 4 corners of the earth. It is not "Kolob" which is not even a Egyptain word.

It is easy to see that what Joseph/scribe did here is take the head of the god in figure 2, and copied it on the knee of Khnum.

Again looking at both of Joseph's Facsimiles, and the two at posts #184, Khnum is accompanied by Baboon gods on his side. You can click Here and see many different examples of this.

BTW the mummy that owned this disk was a woman named Sheshonq, which we will see as we go through this.

More later.

Ralf,

One thing to note, in regard to the facsimiles, is that Fragment 1 and facsimiles 1&3 were documents owned by a known priest named Hor who was from the Egyptain city of Theban, around 300 to 30 BCE.

Facsimile 2, the Hypocephalus, was found with the mummy of Sheshonq. This also dates around the same period, between 300 and 100 BCE.
While we have the genealogy of Hor, as far as I know we do not anything about Sheshong, other than her name was on the Hypocephalus.

So my point here is, given that there is no mention of the name Abraham, on any of the facsimiles or fragments, per any Egyptologist, LDS or non LDS, and the church....how and why did Joseph Smith come up with Abraham being written or construed from these three facsimile explanations?

This is important to keep in mind moving forward.

Ralf, (or anyone)

Fig.

Here Joseph translated this as the figure being God, when in actuality it is another god with two heads, and the name of the god is not preserved in the writing above, but actually reads "the god (broken)" , meaning the gods actual name is in a broken of piece (Lacuna) of the Hypocephlus, but the figure on the staff, and other similar disks state it is the god "Wepwawet." Either way it is not the Mormon God.

Smith said that Kolob is called Oliblish, which giberish, and not a name or word according to Ritner and others.

Smith also said that this is related to Abraham as revealed to him, which is just not the case.

Not also Smith had drawn in a alter in next to the the god where there was a Lacuna....and it is obvious he copied it from facsimile 1/fragment 1.

Wait until I get to fig 7 in facsimile 2.

There is a reason more members leave or primo, because of the BoA than any other reason, except for maybe being deceived in general for all things.

"Leave or Primo"? What does "primo" mean?

Latayne Scott, in her book The Mormon Mirage, wrote that the BoA was the main reason she realized that the Mormon church was false, and Smith was a false prophet. The fake "translations" of the Egyptian text on the scrolls was the last straw for her.

On to figure 6.

View attachment 6010
Joseph Smith's translation:

Fig. 6. Olimlah, a slave belonging to the prince. Abraham is reasoning upon the principles of Astronomy, in the king’s court.

There is a lot to discuss with this figure. Joseph said he was a slave. However above his head is script that reads....

"Words spoken by Anubis who makes protection Lord of heaven, Foremost of the Westerners."
This figure, like in facsimile 1 is Anubis, a Jackal headed god. He is the god of embalming and part of the weighing of the heart, and often seen the Books of the Dead and Books of Breathings performing different rolls. The embalming and preparing of Osiris and the person who owns the book. He again is part of the weighing of the heart, and as here above, is ushering in the owner or the book to Maat who is bringing in Hor to Osiris.

It is pretty much impossible to think that a slave would be pushing a waiter into a prince dressed in drag while a Egyptain king was allowing a Jewish shepherd to sit on his thrown and wear his crown and hold his two scepters. It is just not going to happen.

It appears that Joseph was applying once again 19 century culture here and basically racially profiling by "translating " the person as a slave because of his perceived "Skin color."

However the figure was black of dark skinned because it is fur, the fur of Anubis as a Jackal.

This gets deeper.

Ruben Hedlock was the engraver who engraved the lead plate in which facsimile 3 was printed from, and which was published in the PoGP.

Here is the link for the engraved plate which the church owns at Joseph Smith Papers. Here Keep in mind because it is a printers plate everting on it is in reverse. Now, blow up the head of figure 6. and you will see that someone has chiseled out the snout of Anubis. This was discovered in I believe 2017 ish by researcher on a message board of all places. Here it is blown up in picture form. One can clearly see the outline of the original head and snout. And it explains the point on his head which is a dog ear, and why the mouth looks like a cone after the snout was removed.

It is a auto correct typo. It should read PIMO...."Physically in, mentally out." There are so many member like this these days. You hear them discuss it all the time on other forums. Many have spouses or children that believe, and have deep friendships in the church, but simply do not believe anymore. And many are bishop's, SP's, and other leaders.

If one takes the time to follow this thread you can see just how wrong Joseph got it in short order. In 1835 no one knew how to read the texts, but soon after we can, clearly....and the church even admits it has nothing to do with Abraham, but because it is so critical to Mormon thought about the pre-existence, they are stuck with it.

Do you know of any similar pictures of other Egyptian scrolls, that would show a similar scenario as the one you put on here, that would show Anubis, without his snout being cut off?

No.

The picture I pasted is a pic of the lead printing plate made by the printer JS hired to print the BoA documents in the "Times and Season's."

The printer was not LDS. One theory is that Joseph had already made Anubis in Facsimile 1 a priest, so in Facsimile 3 he did not want to contradict himself so he, or had someone else chisel out the snout and part of the head.

This is so obvious and really a nail in the coffin for any objective study, there is no way around it.

Reuben Hedlock experienced a rise and puzzling fall in the early years of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hedlock was born sometime about 1809, although one source indicates 1803. He joined the Church in 1834 with other family members. He and his family moved to Kirtland, Ohio, and he was called to serve as a counselor in the elders quorum presidency. He then served as president.

As with many of the Saints, he relocated to Missouri in 1838, and then to Illinois in 1839. He was called to labor as a missionary in England and arrived in Liverpool in April 1840. He was the first missionary to preach the gospel in Ireland. A year later, he returned to the Nauvoo, where he was ordained a high priest.

By trade Hedlock was a printer, carpenter, and journeyman. Joseph Smith assigned Hedlock in February 1842 to engrave the original facsimiles that would accompany the text of the Book of Abraham printed in the Church’s newspaper the Times and Seasons. Joseph worked with him, instructing him on the details of the engravings. Hedlock’s name can be seen on the top left side of Facsimile 2 and the bottom of Facsimile 3.

Hedlock produced a “careful, faithful—though not entirely photographically accurate—copy of the papyrus that, in the first publication, preserved the exact size of the originals.” Subsequent versions of the facsimiles were not as carefully copied as Hedlock’s. Editions after 1981 have returned to Hedlock’s originals.

Hedlock also assisted in promoting interest in the Church’s Egyptian collection.

Hedlock was called to preside over the British Mission from October 1843 until he returned in January 1845, after the martyrdom of the Prophet in June 1844. After his return to Nauvoo, he was asked to return to Great Britain and continue as president. His service has been described as “dedicated.”

During this time, the baptism and emigration of new members was significant. The leaders of the Church developed a plan to ease the cost of emigration from England, although they never implemented the plan. Hedlock thought of a plan to assist emigration called the British and American Commercial Joint Stock Company. It was accepted by Church members in England and Hedlock obtained British government approval. The company was promoted in the England-published Millennial Star. Hedlock assisted hundreds of Saints to immigrate to Nauvoo. He arranged the emigration of nonmembers as well.

When the Quorum of the twelve in Council Bluffs, Iowa, learned of the creation of the company, they believed Hedlock had overstepped his role as president of the mission. Hedlock was disfellowshipped in July 1846. The Twelve sent Parley Pratt, John Taylor, and Orson Hyde to look into the matter. They found “financial irregularities’’ in the Joint Stock Company and the British Mission. Hedlock refused to meet with the apostles. Hedlock had “mismanaged Church funds in the past” and had “alienated many British Saints by squandering funds they had consecrated for emigration.”

The Joint Stock Company was dissolved and Hedlock was excommunicated, both in October 1846. Hedlock moved to London and refused to return to his wife and children in America. He married again and died from bronchitis on July 5, 1

Okay he was LDS for awhile, I mixed him up with Grandin.

Can you explain why Joseph had the snout of Anubis chiseled out?
